From Fortune 500 to Flamingo
Maya Chen spent 15 years in marketing — crafting brand narratives for major consumer companies — before she realized the one gift experience she couldn't crack was gifting itself.
Year after year, Maya would receive corporate gift baskets stuffed with stale crackers and generic wine. In 2019, Maya walked away from her director-level role at a Fortune 500 company and opened Happy Flamingo Gifts in a 400-square-foot studio on South Lamar. Every product should come from a local or small-batch artisan whose work she could stand behind. And every presentation should be beautiful enough to photograph — but personal enough to keep.
Within three months, her first 100 orders had shipped. Within a year, she was fielding calls from companies wanting to send her boxes to hundreds of employees. By 2023, over 10,000 gifts had left her studio. Today, Happy Flamingo employs a team of gift stylists, operations experts, and partnership managers — all united by the same conviction Maya held on day one: people deserve gifts that actually mean something.
Maya holds a certification from the Gift Association of America and is an active member of their national steering committee on sustainable packaging. The Beginning
Happy Flamingo Gifts opens in a 400-square-foot studio on South Lamar Blvd. Maya hand-selects every product from Austin artisans and personally assembles the first 100 orders, each with a handwritten note.
Corporate Pivot & Pandemic Resilience
When the pandemic shut down in-person celebrations, we pivoted to virtual gifting — developing shipping solutions for remote employees and socially distanced clients. Our corporate gifting program launches and grows by 300% in eight months.
5,000 Gifts Delivered & Studio Expansion
We hit 5,000 total gifts delivered and open a proper physical studio space complete with a design showroom where clients can come in for in-person consultations and custom gift builds.
Subscriptions Go Nationwide
Our curated gift subscription service launches, and we expand beyond Texas to offer nationwide shipping. Customers from all 50 states can now experience the Happy Flamingo difference on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis.

We open a second location to meet growing demand and launch our eco-packaging line — eliminating single-use plastics from all shipments. Every box now ships in 100% compostable or recycled materials without compromising on presentation.
